*Frailea castanea* is a small, rare, and highly collectible cactus species known for its dark body color and compact, almost hidden growth habit.

This cactus typically grows as a **tiny, depressed globular plant**, often sitting low in the soil surface. The body is usually **dark brown to purplish-brown or almost black**, which gives it a very unique “chestnut-like” appearance (the name *castanea* refers to chestnut color).

The ribs are divided into small, rounded tubercles arranged in subtle spirals. Areoles produce **very short, fine spines** that lie close to the body, usually light in color (whitish to pale yellow), creating a soft contrast against the dark epidermis.

One of the most fascinating traits of *Frailea castanea* is its flowering behavior. It produces **bright yellow flowers**, but in many cases, the flowers **do not fully open** (a phenomenon called cleistogamy). Even without opening, the plant can self-pollinate and produce seeds, making it easy to propagate despite its rarity.

In good conditions, however, the flowers may open fully in strong light and warmth, revealing a classic Frailea bloom.
