Astrophytum asterias Turtle is a small, spineless cactus famous for its flattened body, unique turtle-shell-like bumps, and symmetrical shape. This mutation gives the plant an ornamental and sculptural appearance highly prized by collectors.

Stem: Flat to slightly domed, up to 6–8 cm in diameter.
Color varies from green to gray-green, covered with small white dots (trichomes) forming elegant patterns.

Ribs: 8 distinct ribs with raised polygonal or horned tubercles resembling turtle shell segments.

Spines: Completely spineless — smooth and safe to handle.

Flowers: Large, silky yellow with an orange or red center, appearing from the crown in summer.

Fruits: Small, greenish-pink and woolly, containing shiny black seeds.

Care and Cultivation:
Light:

Needs bright filtered sunlight or partial shade.

Avoid direct intense midday sun, especially in summer.

Indoors, use LED grow lights for compact growth.

Temperature:

Ideal range: 20–35°C (68–95°F).

Never expose below 10°C (50°F) — it’s a warm-loving cactus.

In winter, keep dry and protected from cold drafts.

Watering:

Water moderately during the growing season (spring to autumn).

Allow soil to fully dry before watering again.

Keep completely dry in winter.

Avoid watering the body directly to prevent fungal spots.

Soil:

Use very well-draining soil mix: 50% pumice or perlite, 25% coarse sand, 25% cactus soil.

Avoid compact or organic-rich mixes — root rot risk is high.

Potting:

Grow in shallow, wide pots with excellent drainage.

Repot every 2–3 years in spring; handle gently.

Use clay pots for better airflow to roots.

Flowering Time:

Produces flowers in late spring and summer.

Flowers last 2–3 days but bloom repeatedly under ideal light.

Propagation:

Seeds are the most common method (slow-growing).

Grafting onto Myrtillocactus geometrizans or Hylocereus rootstock promotes faster growth and helps preserve rare forms.

Water moderately and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Place in bright, indirect sunlight for best results. Use well-draining potting mix and fertilize during growing season.
